Chaplain Walt Cooper’s Heart

Many ask, “What is a chaplain?” I can only let you know what is from my heart. “To care for the needs and develop relationships with every employee who permits me to treat them as family. As family, we can personally be there for celebrating praises, supporting employees when the bottom falls out, supporting a family member in an emergency, listening and talking about life’s good, bad and ugly, as well as to just say, “Hi”, talk and pray with you.”

My wife of 26 years is Michelle, and our 2 children are Teya (16) and Chandler (15). We have lived in New Mexico, Turkey, North Dakota, Saudi Arabia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and now Tennessee.

Before marrying Michelle, I grew up in Savannah, Ga. and Charleston, S.C., and spent summers on the family dairy farm.  While growing up, parents and grandparents taught me the value of family and hard work.

After marrying Michelle, I served in the United States Air Force for 7 years.  At each assignment, the value of serving and helping others was key. Helping all families was valued and everyone was family.

After the Air Force, I pastored and we adopted Teya and Chandler.  We knew we were to continue to serve others and for about 5 years, we worked with The Salvation Army. We were taught by many homeless military veterans, families and parolees in Western North Carolina.  We were treated as family. They taught us about real-life and blessed us in many ways.

All of this leads up to today.  Gladly an opportunity as a workplace-chaplain became available.  Michelle, Teya, Chandler and I spent time in prayer and knew we were to move to Memphis, Tennessee to serve local employees.  By now you may know that family helping family is key.

Family is bigger than a name and I love serving a bigger family than I already have.  Thank you for allowing me to serve the Cooper Freight family as a Chaplain from Corporate Chaplains of America!
